Novesta’s German Army Trainer is based on the original GAT design, which in essence, is a dressy classic gym shoe silhouette, combining leather and suede uppers and a delightful off-white midsole, that makes for easy wear across different wardrobe applications.
The German Army Trainer, commonly known as the GAT is easily recognised by an all leather low-top body, and suede leather cap applied around the toe box, eyestay, and body. Tracing the origins of the German Army Trainer, we tell the story of the shoe hitting the ground at the 1936 Berlin Summer Olympics, when Adolf Dassler, better known as “Adi”, drove to Berlin during the Games and convinced American track star Jesse Owens to wear a pair of their leather running shoes with extra-long spikes, which helped him strike gold in four events.
The winning GAT design is an indoor adaptation of the track shoe the Dassler brothers created for Jesse Owens in the 1936 Olympics, sans the spikes. The style became known as the “bundeswehr sportschuhe” translated as federal defence sports shoe, with a practicality and comfort that made it instantly favoured for training exercises, and received a nod for use in German military service.
